Uncle Ray's Movie List |
|

|
So here is a list of my favorite movies and my thoughts on 'em. It started out as a list of war movies for my gaming buddies and morphed into a list of "mens" movies dominated by the war genre. One aspect of it that makes it a little different than all of the other movie lists out there is the inclusion of the Setting Date. I'm one of those people who gets "in the mood" for a particular era and I wanted to see all of the movies for a particular period. When it comes to trying to categorize moves by period the lines are quickly blurred though and some are completely ignored. For example, "Sword & Sandals" doesn't differentiate between Roman and Greek, so I decided to include the initial or predominant year in which a movie is set. This allows a unique view of movie titles set in historical order. Kind of cool when you look at the ancients movies in particular!
(Other lists and sites I have found useful: ~ Now, as to what movies I've included. If it's on this list, I have watched it, usually own it and often liked it. ANY war movie I watch, good or bad, goes on the list. Other movies (Adventure, Action, Historical, Comedy etc) go on if they have a strong war influence or I just really liked it. I have a corresponding back-log list of movies yet to watch and will get to them eventually. This list is not all-inclusive and certain favorite categories of mine (Baseball, Religious, etc) are left off deliberately. 2011: At the request of a couple of friends I've added my "grade" for each movie. It works like you would think a letter grade should from "A" through "F". It is my impression of the movie, nothing more. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!.
• "§" This
marks movies that I call "guilty pleasures". I know these are bad,
but I like them anyway so the grade may be my attempt at being honest
with you but I have to note that I kind of like the darn thing anyway.

||
| Setting Date: I defined this
as " the initial or predominant year in which a movie's major
action is set." This means initial flashbacks or backstory
may be ignored. Where no date was specified I have used the decade
or nearest appropriate year of a major event, or finally (especially in
the case of the "MODERN" era) the movie's release
date.
The year is specified in four digit format assuming an A.D. with B.C. years specified as a negative four-digit number. Sci-Fi movies which do not have a specific date are given a 9999. Fantasy movies which do not have a specific date are given a -9999 |
| Setting Date | Era | TITLE | Year Released |
My Grade |
NOTES |
| -9999 | FANTASY | Army of Darkness | 1993 | B | What category would this go in? |
| -9999 | FANTASY | Excalibur | 1981 | B- | Though based on Le Morte d'Arthur (c1485) about the Arthurian legends of the late 5th Century, it's a mish-mash of legends and lore. Visually stunning but a little chaotic I still liked it! Loads of great actors early work including Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson and personal fav Ciarán Hinds (HBO's ROME). |
| -9999 | FANTASY | Game of Thrones | 2011 | AA+ | HBO has done it again! Awesome screenplay of a personal fav book series! GRR Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" is recounted here in breathtaking (and VERY adult) form. A can't miss for the fantasy/medieval buff! |
| -9999 | FANTASY | The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey | 2012 | A+ | Not as good as LOtR but then... |
| -9999 | FANTASY | The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug | 2013 | A+ | Not as good as LOtR but then... |
| -9999 | FANTASY | The Hobbit: There and Back Again | 2014 | A+ | Not as good as LOtR but then... |
| -9999 | FANTASY | Lord
of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring |
2001 | AA+ | Awesome. |
| -9999 | FANTASY | Lord
of the Rings: The Return of the King |
2003 | AA+ | Awesome |
| -9999 | FANTASY | Lord
of the Rings: The Two Towers |
2002 | AA+ | Awesome |
| -9999 | FANTASY | Jack the Giant Slayer | 2013 | A | Tame plot but the giants were really cool! |
| -9999 | FANTASY | Snow White and the Huntsman | 2012 | C | Okay version. Liked that they had many of the story elements in a twisted sense. Good fight scenes. |
| -9999 | FANTASY | Mirror, Mirror | 2012 | Did we really need two of these? | |
| -3074 | FANTASY | Scorpion King, The | 2002 | C | Fun adventure romp unencumbered by any historical claims whatsoever. The date is based on the "The Mummy" occurring 5,000 years later. |
| -1190 | ANCIENT | Helen of Troy | 2003 | B | Enjoyable retelling of the Iliad. I like Achilles here better even if he isn’t close to the original writings. |
| -1190 | ANCIENT | Troy | 2004 | B | Neat action variation of the Iliad. Has an interesting take on Achilles. |
| -480 | FANTASY | 300 | 2006 | D | Adaptation of comic book version of history. No history except the names and the results. Very stylish CGI. |
| -480 | ANCIENT | The 300 Spartans | 1962 | B | The 1962 movie depicting the Battle of Thermopylae. It inspired the 300's comic artist. Enjoyable |
| -73 | ANCIENT | Spartacus | 1960 | B | ‘Gladiator’ when gladiatin’ wasn’t so cool. I’m a Kirk Douglas fan. |
| -73 | ANCIENT | Spartacus | 2004 | C- | Goran Visnjic in title role. No history, only modest script. |
| -73 | ANCIENT | Spartacus: Blood in the Sand | 2010 | C- | Starz entry into the quasi-historical race. Fun, adults only and just as much history as a Xena episode! |
| -44 | ANCIENT | Rome | 2005 | AA | Simply Awesome! License with the history but the feel of the lives of real people of the Roman world is amazing. |
ANCIENT | Boudica | 2003 | B+ | Good fighting scenes, a little light on history. Ends kind of abruptly, as if they ran out of money!
ANCIENT | Eagle, The | 2011 | B | Based on the 1954 novel "The Eagle of the Ninth" about the Legio IX Hispana the movie is a solid adventure tale. Early fight scenes are really good. Rest of movie is serviceable. Watch the alternate endings.
ANCIENT | Fall of the Roman Empire, The | 1964 | A | Before ‘Gladiator’ was this epoch. Some names are the same only the faces change.
ANCIENT | Gladiator | 2000 | A | What’s not to like? Light on history but aces on fighting!
ANCIENT | Attilla | 2001 | D- | Watched because I like both Gerard Butler and Powers Boothe. Enjoyed some really good combat sequences with Roman on barbarian action but the Roman equipment is too old for the period and the Hx is really bad. See list here.
ANCIENT | King Arthur | 2004 | B-§ | Interesting attempt to blend an action movie with a quasi-historical view of Arthur. Kudos for creativity, history is hazy at best (Rome left Britain c406AD) but an enjoyable movie!
MEDIEVAL | The 13th Warrior | 1999 | A+ | From “Eaters of the Dead” it’s AD 922 and Vikings head off to fight monsters. Awesome combat! Really good!
MEDIEVAL | The Great Wall | 2016 | B | Matt Damon may be miscast (just imagine him as Bourne 1000AD) but this movie was pretty good. Kind of a "13th Warrior" for another generation. Great fantasy yarn with some Chinese culture thrown in! I liked it better than the critics!
MEDIEVAL | El Cid | 1961 | C | Heston as the 11th century Castilian knight Don Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar. Beautiful even if slow! Sophia Loren sued over the billing. Heston hated Loren for the money she got.
MEDIEVAL | War Lord, The | 1965 | B+ | Heston as an 11th century Norman knight fighting Druid/barbarians for his tower. Awesome fighting! Lauded for its reasonable history of life of the period and feudalism.
MEDIEVAL | Pillars of the Earth | 2010 | A- | Ken Follet's excellent novel brought faithfully to life. Prior Phillip et al building a cathedral in Kingsbridge during “The Anarchy” (1135–1154). This is the period of civil war After Henry I dies and King Stephen of England claims the throne.
MEDIEVAL | Cadfael | 1994-96 | A+ | Set during “The Anarchy” in English history (1135–1154). This is the period of civil war during the reign of King Stephen of England with his cousin Maud (Matilda). Many good fight scenes and a lot of military references. Cadfael himself is a reformed soldier turned monk. Ellis Peters' books are must reads.
MEDIEVAL | Beckett | 1964 | B | Peter O'Toole as Henry II. Story of the murder based on a play by Jean Anouilh with many historical inaccuracies. Richard Burton in titular role. Very well acted and engrossing.
MEDIEVAL | Lion in Winter, The | 1968 | B | Peter O'Toole as Henry II. (again!) fictionalized account of a decision on succession. Names true, actions not, no war. Hepburn won an Oscar.
MEDIEVAL | Kingdom of Heaven | 2005 | B- | 12th century, siege of Jerusalem by Saladin. Not terribly historical but good fight scenes.
MEDIEVAL | Talisman, The | 1980 | B | Walter Scott’s variations on the 3rd crusade and Richard I.
MEDIEVAL | Ivanhoe | 1982 | B+ | James Mason, Sam Neill and John Rhys-Davies. Solid version.
MEDIEVAL | Ivanhoe | 1952 | B | Liz Taylor and Robert Taylor do Scott. Enjoyable version.
ANCIENT | Conqueror, The | 1956 | C- § | A Howard Hughes-funded box-office bomb featuring John Wayne as Genghis Khan and the redheaded Susan Hayward as a Tatar princess. This is one of those guilty pleasures for me.
ANCIENT | Genghis Khan | 1965 | B | Much better (if not historical) effort with Omar Sharif as Genghis Khan. James Mason, Eli Wallach and Robert Morley all play asians. (setting date from the siege of Yanjing [Beijing])
MEDIEVAL | Ironclad | 2009 | B | James Purefoy, Brian Cox in this historically challenged telling of the Siege of Rochester Castle. Still a decent war movie with lots of bloody combat. Just be sure to check out the real history as well.
MEDIEVAL | Alexander Nevsky | 1938 | B | Pure Soviet propaganda, but set the cinematic standard for battle scenes even to today. You gotta want to watch it as it is a product of its day, but worth the effort to see the origin of so many things we take for granted. Not a lot of history, but that wasn't the purpose.
MEDIEVAL | Braveheart | 1995 | B | What’s not to like? Little history but great fighting! (My setting date is based on the Battle of Falkirk)
MEDIEVAL | Outlaw King | 2018 | B | Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce, rough on history (Edward II wasn't at the Battle of Loudoun Hill) but fun movie and Pine's portrayal is cool if not very realistic!
MEDIEVAL | Black Death | 2010 | A | Sean Bean as a knight sent to find a necromancer. Very good! Keep seeing it referred to as a "horror" movie but really not a good fit, More of an "adventure story with some scary bits."
MEDIEVAL | The King | 2019 | C | Derivative "GoT" version of Shakespeare's Henriad made to look like history. No single combat with HotSpur, No Dauphin at Agincourt and the "heroic" Falstaff make this meh for me. Ok as a fantasy film.
MEDIEVAL | Henry V | 1944 | B | Laurence Olivier starred and directed. The film was made during WWII as a morale booster for Britain. Olivier intentionally leaves out some of Henry's harsher actions. Solid version.
MEDIEVAL | Henry V | 1989 | B | Kenneth Branagh knows Shakespeare. Great adaptation!
MEDIEVAL | The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc | 1999 | A | Very cool telling of the story with some liberties taken. Milla Jovovich as Joan. Great period battle scenes!
MEDIEVAL | Richard III | 1955 | A | Shakespeare’s play about Richard III, adapted many times, but Laurence Olivier’s 1955 version is a fav, as well as one of the best adaptations of Shakespeare, period.
ANCIENT | Apocalypto | 2006 | A+ | During the post-classical period of the Mayans (c.1500?) and arrival of the Spanish (end of film.) A cool fighting and chase flick. Lavish and exciting even if sub-titled.
RENAISSANCE | Agony and the Ecstasy, The | 1965 | A | Lots of Pope Julius II (Rex Harrison) in battle, more of Heston’s Michelangelo painting. Enjoyable!
HISTORICAL | The Tudors | 2007- 2010
B | I was prepared to hate it but I didn't! Pretty good, heavily modified, fictionalized and heated-up-for-modern-audiences telling of old Henry VIII. Interesting take on Thomas More as a zealot and inquisitor is very different from "A Man for All Seasons". Worth watching and much more engaging than most. Just don't start thinking it is history. |
HISTORICAL | A Man for All Seasons | 1966 | AA+ | A thinking man's movie. Paul Scofield as Sir Thomas More. Shaw as Henry. Classic.
HISTORICAL | Anne of the Thousand Days | 1969 | B | Burton as Henry. Good.
HISTORICAL | Virgin Queen, The | 2005 | B | Better than all of the Elizabeth’s out there. The players are much more age-appropriate than any other production. Elizabeth was 26 on coronation.
SWORD & SHOT | Taras Bulba | 1962 | B | Yul Brenner is great! I wasn't as fond of Tony Curtis in the role of one his sons. Movie is good, nice fighting. Suffers from same historical issues as the original novels.
SWORD & SHOT | Shogun | 1980 | B+ | Early 17th century Japan. If you can sit through it, it’s worth it!
SWORD & SHOT | Cyrano de Bergerac | 1990 | B | I know…but it’s got some neat army/combat scenes while Cyrano (Gérard Depardieu) fights in the war.
SWORD & SHOT | Cyrano de Bergerac | 1950 | A | I happen to like Jose Ferrer better in the role, but then…see Cockleshell Heroes (1955)
| 1640 | SWORD & SHOT | The Four
Musketeers: Milady's Revenge |
1974 | B | Cool sequel with an interesting back story. |
SWORD & SHOT | Musketeer, The | 2001 | B | Very cool modern version. Story way off and the martial style very asian but fun to watch.
SWORD & SHOT | Three Musketeers, The | 1993 | B | A hipper, more ADD version. Fun to watch, though!
SWORD & SHOT | Three Musketeers, The | 1973 | AA | It’s sixteen-hundred and something or another, it’s France and this is a good yarn. Still the best!
DOCUMENTARY | Rembrandt's J'accuse | 2008 | A | Documentary by Peter Greenaway on Rembrandt's "The Nigh Watch" painting, detailing a conspiracy theory that it could document a murder.
SWORD & SHOT | To Kill a King | 2003 | B- | An English hit job on Cromwell (Roth) as psycho and a fawning portrait of Fairfax. Lot of errors from the historical view kept it from being a slam-dunk for me. Cromwell was instrumental in the formation of the New Model Army and a great general.
SWORD & SHOT | Cromwell | 1970 | A+ | If you’re an ECW fan, here’s your flick. Lots of battle scenes.
SWORD & SHOT | Man in the Iron Mask, The | 1977 | A | Awesome TV mini-series version of the classic adventure story with Richard Chamberlain
SWORD & SHOT | Man in the Iron Mask, The | 1998 | C | DiCaprio was miscast. But who wouldn’t like Malkovich, Depardieu, Irons and Byrne?
SWORD & SHOT | Return of the Musketeers, The | 1989 | A | Solid sequel with same actors plus additions as the '73 and '74 versions!
SWORD & SHOT | Restoration | 1995 | C | Enjoyable period piece with Neill and Downy. Like Vatel, just a solid story and good drama. Note: The author of the novel didn't like the screenwriting.
SWORD & SHOT | Vatel | 2000 | C | Gérard Depardieu as a famous French chef/"Master of Festivities and Pleasures". A french love story wouldn't normally get a mention from me but the historical life aspects of the King's visit made it a very interesting movie.
| 1683 | HISTORICAL | The
Day of the Siege: September Eleven 1683 |
2012 | D | Beginning after the First Siege of Vienna the century before. It shows the alleged circumstances of the 2nd siege of Vienna and the assault of Ottoman Turks led by Kara Mustafa (Enrico Lo Verso) against the Habsburg monarchy. Generally bad all around. Setting aside the historical concerns, weapons and costumes grim. |
HISTORICAL | The Draughtsman's Contract | 1982 | C | Weird Peter Greenaway period piece about the murder of a lord and subsequent events involving a quirky artist. Great music, involving (if not quite sane) characters and plot.
HISTORICAL | Kidnapped | 1995 | B | If you can believe Armand Assante as Alan Breck…you will love it. Better action than the Disney version.
HISTORICAL | Culloden | 1964 | C | Interesting "docudrama" take on the battle. Treated as if war reporting were a feature of the period.
SYW/FIW/AWI | Barry Lyndon | 1975 | D+ | 18th Century piece lavish in period, good story but plods along. Takes liberties with Thackeray's novel in many places.
SYW/FIW/AWI | Last of the Mohicans, The | 1992 | AA | One of my favs. F&I fare with good cast and great fights.
SYW/FIW/AWI | John Paul Jones | 1959 | B- | Not history but exciting all the same.
SYW/FIW/AWI | Northwest Passage | 1940 | B+ | Roger's Rangers and their attack on the Abenaki town of St. Francis in the fall of 1759. Good acting by Spencer Tracy and Walter Brennan. Great fun with enough historical accuracy and action to keep you happy.
HISTORICAL | Longitude | 2000 | B+ | Granada TV series about John Harrison, the inventor of a marine clock accurate enough to determine longitude at sea. Michael Gambon and Jeremy Irons star.
SYW/FIW/AWI | Benedict Arnold: A Question of Honor | 2003 | A+ | Kelsey Grammer as Washington and Aidan Quinn as Arnold. I liked this movie a lot! Well done historical account.
SYW/FIW/AWI | 1776 | 1972 | B | The film version of the Broadway musical of the same name. Not a “war” movie but cool.
SYW/FIW/AWI | Crossing, The | 2000 | A+ | Washington whips the Redcoats at Trenton! Jeff Daniels makes a surprisingly good Washington! Very cool movie.
SYW/FIW/AWI | Drums Along the Mohawk | 1939 | B | John Ford's classic with Henry Fonda as a farmer/warrior.
SYW/FIW/AWI | John Adams | 2008 | A+ | First two episodes center around the war and later the “Quasi-War”. Unlike the critics, I loved Paul Giamatti as Adams.
SYW/FIW/AWI | Patriot, The | 2000 | A- | Not completely historically true to Cowpens or Guilford Courthouse but a good war movie.
SYW/FIW/AWI | Revolution | 1985 | D+ | It’s Pacino as the reluctant patriot. Watch it for the battles alone.
SYW/FIW/AWI | Valley Forge | 1975 | B+ | No battles but a lot of good drama in this adapted play. Not to everyone’s taste. Richard Basehart stars.
HISTORICAL | Madness of King George, The | 1994 | A+ | Great movie with Nigel Hawthorne as the titular character.
ADVENTURE | Scarlet Pimpernel, The (TV series) | 1999 | A | Personal fav with Richard Grant in the title role. Lots of fun!
ADVENTURE | Scarlet Pimpernel, The | 2005 | A | Wonderful old movie with Leslie Howard as Sir Percy and the great Raymond Massey as Citizen Chauvelin.
HISTORICAL | Beau Brummell: This Charming Man | 2006 | B | James Purefoy as the title character in this cool period piece. Fun, but mainly for the period enthusiast as it deals with fashion and royalty. Beau Brummell is credited with introducing and establishing as fashion the modern man's suit, worn with a tie.
NAPOLEONIC | Duellists, The | 1977 | C | Some of the best fencing scenes ever. (Even if it is Harvey Keitel)
NAPOLEONIC | Horatio Hornblower Series | 1999-03 | AA+ | A MUST SEE! No bad episodes. Ioan Gruffud before that super-hero dreck. Simply Awesome!!!!
NAPOLEONIC | Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World | 2003 | A | Not as good as the HH series, but a very cool.
NAPOLEONIC | Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N. | 1951 | B- | Gregory Peck as H. Fun movie with lots of swashbuckling!
NAPOLEONIC | Sharpe Series | 1993-97 | AA | A MUST SEE! I became a Sean Bean fan because of this series.
NAPOLEONIC | War And Peace | 1956 | C | If you can take the miscasting of Henry Fonda as Pierre Bezhukov then it isn't too bad. Typical of the abbreviated (3+hrs!) literature-to-film genre. A young Jeremy Brett in his first major film role plays Nicholas Rostov.
SWORD & SHOT | Count of Monte Cristo, The | 2002 | A | Less true to the book than the '75 version (if possible) but a great romp! Think of it as more of a "reimagining" or "reboot" of the classic tale. Stands on its own. A very good movie!
SWORD & SHOT | Count of Monte-Cristo, The | 1998 | _ | Gérard Depardieu as Edmond Dantès in this subtitled French TV miniseries. Waiting on my DVD!
SWORD & SHOT | Count of Monte-Cristo, The | 1975 | A | Richard Chamberlain’s TV version. Plot suffers from condensed form and compressed characters making aspects of the Edmund's ordeal somewhat confusing. Dated but still good!
NAPOLEONIC | Eagle In A Cage | 1972 | B | Gielgud and Richardson as Brit officials holding Napoleon after Waterloo. Conjecture regarding UK offer to let him retake control of France.
NAPOLEONIC | Waterloo | 1970 | B+ | Rod Steiger as Napoleon Bonaparte. Very plodding/ introspective. THE BATTLE SCENES ARE EPIC IN SCALE but not as many as I would have liked considering all of the Soviet soldiery used as extras! Plummer as Wellington is fun. Orson Welles as LouisXVIII.
NAPOLEONIC | The Emperors New Clothes | 2001 | B | Clever and charming twist on the Bonaparte story with his escape and subsequent adventures. Ian Holm as Napoleon. Not a war movie (unless you count fruit sales) but an enjoyable romp for the "Napophile".
SWORD & SHOT | Shaka Zulu (series) | 1986 | B | South African story of the Zulu King. Henry Cele in the title role and Edward Fox were superb. I really like dthe portrayal of Shaka's court as a political entity as opposed to the "heathen" cliche of tribal leaders so often seen. Budget battle scenes are made up for by lavish costumes. Loooong series of 10 one-hour episodes. Worth watching!
MUSKET | Texas | 1994 | B | I happened to enjoy the battle scenes in this one though the whole thing is a little long.
MUSKET | Alamo, The | 1960 | B § | A classic and enjoyable non-historic look at the battle.
MUSKET | Alamo, The | 2004 | B+ | A classic and enjoyable. More historic look at the battles of both the Alamo and San Jacinto. I enjoyed this movie very much. Its character studies were much more true to life than the classic but not quite as heroic. Thornton’s “Davy Crockett” steals the show.
MUSKET | One Man's Hero | 1999 | B+ | The little-known story of the "St. Patrick's Brigade" or "San Patricios". Americans that fought for Mexico Tom Berenger stars in a very good movie.
VICTORIAN | Royal Flash | 1974 | C- | Adventure based on George MacDonald Fraser's second Flashman novel. Stars Malcolm McDowell as Flashman. Not anywhere near as good as the book, but enjoyable enough.
WESTERN | Walker | 1987 | F- | Ed Harris in the title role. Weird mix of history, anachronism and surrealism telling the story of this "filibuster". Lots of fighting. Too freakin' weird for me. At end a helicopter (yep, helicopter) lands in the town. This movie was a statement against western involvement in Latin America in the eighties I guess.
VICTORIAN | Charge of the Light Brigade, The | 1936 | C- | Errol Flynn in a non-historical but very cool version of the Crimean battle.
WESTERN | Hawmps? | 1976 | C- | TV movie comedy dealing with the US Cav's experiment with camels in the west. Little history. Fun but VERY 70's!
VICTORIAN | King of the Kyhber Rifles | 1953 | C | Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, Captain Alan King (Tyrone Power) is a mixed race officer in Her Majesty's Service.
ACW | Blue and the Gray, The | 1982 | B | Better than N&S imho. Best line “We all’s got a balloon corps?”
ACW | North and South I & II, The | 1985 | C | Patric Swayze aside, I liked this one. Good cast and sweeping story. Book adaptation.
ACW | Gods and Generals | 2003 | C+ | Okay movie. Good battles. Very dull in between. Only for the ACW aficionado. Battles of First Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville
ACW | Great Locomotive Chase, The | 1956 | B | A pretty good story (if not completely accurate) of the event.
ACW | Journey to Shiloh | 1968 | C | Very "sixties" take but decent adventure. More of a quest movie but has some decent battle scenes.
ACW | Escape From Fort Bravo | 1953 | B+ | Typical Western soldiery yarn with good military ending. The ACW hx is weak (The CSA in the NM Territory was done after the Battle of Glorieta Pass in 1862) but acceptable. Movie is typical of the period. I'm a Holden fan so it gets a bump!
ACW | Gettysburg | 1993 | A+ | Great movie!
ACW | Glory | 1989 | B | Good movie! Attack on Fort Wagner. As always, history suffers (54th was all freedmen, not runaway slaves)
ACW | Horse Soldiers, The | 1959 | AA | A favorite! The Duke & Bill Holden. Union cavalry behind the lines. Great charge scene!
ACW | Red Badge of Courage, The | 1951 | B |
ACW | Red Badge of Courage, The | 1974 | |
ACW | Andersonville | 1996 | B+ | Great movie. Compelling and depressing.
ACW | Dances with Wolves | 1990 | C | Yeah, okay. I put it in.
ACW | Lincoln | 2012 | A | A thinking man's movie about the political efforts to pass the 13th Amendment. Really good.
ACW | Undefeated, The | 1969 | A | I’m putting this here because I like it and it is ACW driven. Rock Hudson and John Wayne.
WESTERN | Magnificent Seven, The | 1960 | A | A “war” movie…maybe not but is a war for a village less than a battle of nations? Some would say Kurosawa’s “Shichinin no samurai” (1954) (The Seven Samurai) is better but it’s in Japanese and doesn’t have Yul Brynner or Eli Wallach. Bah!
VICTORIAN | Rhodes: The Life and Legend of Cecil Rhodes | 1996 | B | Eight-part television drama about Rhodes' life. Very cool with some modern sentiments getting in the way of the story of a great man.
WESTERN | Arrowhead | 1953 | B | Heston stars as Ed Bannon, a scout that helps the US Army fight renegade Apaches. Good tactical explanations and battle scenes raise this movie above others of the era. Solid acting. The Bannon character is based on a real man named Al Sieber who's life was very interesting.
SCIFI | Cowboys and Aliens | 2011 | B | Liked it. Couldn't help myself. Acting was decent, story unassailable due to the subject matter and the aliens were interesting if unprepared. Still don't get what they were actually doing with the gold though.
VICTORIAN | 7th Cavalry | 1956 | B | Suffers from 50s syndrome. Defends Custer by making all of his staff look evil along with a bad love story. The scenes to retrieve the dead offers command drama but the resolution is weak.
VICTORIAN | Last Samurai, The | 2003 | B | The mood is all “Shogun” and the movie is okay. (GUNS BEAT SWORDS, every time it’s tried!) Decent movie though.
VICTORIAN | Zulu | 1964 | AA+ | Stanley Baker and Michael Caine at Rorke's Drift! A must see!
VICTORIAN | Zulu Dawn | 1979 | A+ | Historical prequel of sorts to ‘Zulu’ and a damn fine movie! Burt Lancaster and Simon Ward.
VICTORIAN | Conduct Unbecoming | 1975 | B | Stellar cast in essentially a courtroom drama set in British India. Good for the viewer that likes the period!
VICTORIAN | Gunga Din | 1939 | B |
| 1880 | WESTERN | Quigley Down Under | 1990 | A | Tom Selleck as the ultimate
sharpshooter. Great Movie! One of those I can't pass up on TV.
Has one of my favorite lines. After repeatedly stating he doesn't like
pistols throughout the movie, Quigley uses one to devastating effect
stating; "I said I never had much use for one. Never said I didn't know how to use it." |
VICTORIAN | Khartoum | 1966 | B+ | Heston as Gordon. 'nuff said.
VICTORIAN | Four Feathers, The | 2002 | B | Heath Ledger; Placed during the 1884-1885 campaign, includes the Battle of Abu Klea (which the Brits actually win)
WESTERN | Geronimo | 1962 | B- | If you can accept Chuck Connors as a native american then the movie is really pretty good. History is a little mixed-up (Geronimo actually claimed to have been a good farmer) but reasonable. Good old-school, pre-political correctness movie.
WESTERN | Open Range | 2003 | A+ | Duvall & Costner in a modern classic! I especially enjoy Costner's reluctant but efficient gunfighter.
VICTORIAN | Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmes | AA+ | Definitive screen version of the stories. Includes several cool Victorian war episodes. These are historically accurate insights to the British army of the period or of other regions in flashbacks. The Crooked Man (1/5), The Illustrious Client (5/32), The Master Blackmailer I & II (6/34-35), The |
VICTORIAN | Sherlock Holmes | 2009 | A | Very enjoyable actioner variation of the traditional character. Downey's Holmes is a combination of Tony Stark and Batman but he and Law deliver a very enjoyable, if not canonical, take on the sleuth.
VICTORIAN | Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows | 2011 | A § | A sequel that is actually an IMPROVEMENT on its predecessor! Same great flavor but a much improved storyline. Stephen Fry is a nice addition. Fits right in to the troupe.
VICTORIAN | Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India | 2001 | A | I really enjoyed this Bollywood crossover. Set during the colonial period. The “battle” is a cricket match.
VICTORIAN | I Accuse! | 1958 | B | Classic version of the Dreyfus Affair starring Jose Ferrer.
VICTORIAN | Prisoner of Honor | 1991 | B | TV version of the Dreyfus Affair with Richard Dreyfuss (no relation) in the role of Colonel Picquart. Also includes Oliver Reed and Jeremy Kemp!
ADVENTURE | Way of the West, The (The Mountie) | 2011 | C | Really not a great movie as an art form, but I kind of liked the story. Andrew Walker did make the Mounties look like bad, bad men. Learned more about Canada than I thought I would.
VICTORIAN | Four Feathers, The | 1939 | B | Placed during the 1897 campaign, includes the Battle of Omdurman
VICTORIAN | 55 Days at Peking | 1963 | A | Chuck Heston with a group of diplomats, soldiers and other representatives of a dozen nations fend off the siege of the International Compound in Peking during the 1900 Boxer Rebellion. The entrance of the International forces is one of the coolest moments in all of cinema (I do have peasant tastes!)
VICTORIAN | Lives of a Bengal Lancer, The | 1935 | B | Gary Cooper in a fun pic. Reported to be one of Adolph Hitler’s favs!
VICTORIAN | Young Winston | 1972 | A+ | I happen to love this film for the political intrigues, however, the Boer War combat is pretty good too; especially the train attack.
VICTORIAN | Breaker' Morant | 1980 | C+ | More court room drama than Boer war battle but good flick. I like Woodward.
VICTORIAN | Wind and the Lion, The | 1975 | B | Brian Keith as Teddy Roosevelt and Sean Connery as a Muslim. ‘Nough said.
WWI | Beau Geste | 1939 | A | “Keep shooting, you scum!” Sgt Markof (Brian Donlevy) steals the show from Cooper’s “Beau”! Classic!

WWI | Zeppelin | 1971 | B | Michael York. More spy thriller than war but some good fighting towards the end. Story of German attempt to raid Great Britain and steal the Magna Carta from its hiding place in Scotland. The vehicle for the assault was a giant Zeppelin.
WWI | All the King's Men | 1999 | C+ | BBC drama of the fate of the "Sandringham Company" (volunteers from the King's servants) in 1915 at Gallipoli. Choppy and it really ticked off the Turks. Only for the die-hard.
WWI | Gallipoli | 1981 | C | Aussie war film about Battle of the Nek with Mel Gibson. Okay history of 1900s Australia with anti-British and anti-war slant. For the period fan.
WWI | Fraulein Doktor | 1968 | C | With the exception of some pretty good WWI battle scenes towards the end, this one was at best "choppy". Neat idea, questionable execution, weak acting. Like "Waterloo" of the same era (1970) suffered from the "art attack" at the expense of the viewer. Only for the die-hard.
WWI | Paths of Glory | 1957 | B | Kirk Douglas as French officer is odd casting. Movie is good drama.
WWI | Red Baron, The | 2008 | C- | Good movie, light history. Does make WWI aircraft seem more potent than other movies. The Baron is a little too "mod" but an interesting take.
WWI | Aces High | 1976 | B- | Christopher Plummer, Simon Ward, Malcolm McDowell. Solid outing for the genre lover. Re-uses some sequences from The Blue Max.
WWI | Flyboys | 2006 | C- | Watchable but weak and mixed-up history of the Lafayette Escadrille. Hated the love story. Close ups of the pilots in air were laughable.
WWI | Lawrence of Arabia | 1962 | A+ | Great battle scenes mixed with a warped view of the real man.
WWI | Passchendaele | 2008 | C+ | Canadian patriotic film. Early on, a solid war movie but the whole crucified soldier thing towards the end is way 'over-the-top' (so to speak). Decent history (excluding the protagonist's bit) and stunning visuals for the WWI fans.
WWI | Wonder Woman | 2017 | F- | Latest super-hero dreck. Reboot of titular character; with the most illogical, poorly written crap about WWI. "Battle" scenes are laughable, action almost impossible to follow. Just really bad.
WWI | Blue Max, The | 1966 | AA | A “must-see” movie for the WWI aviation lover! Peppard & Kemp are great in this movie!
WWI | Lost Battalion, The | 2001 | A+ | Good movie with some incredible combat scenes. Very realistic feel. Highly recommend!
WWI | Sergeant York | 1941 | AA | Awesome! Gary Cooper at his finest.
WWI | March or Die | 1977 | C | Gene Hackman as an FFL Officer. Okay.
IRELAND | The Wind That Shakes the Barley | 2006 | B | Engrossing, pro-Republican (IRA) story of Irish independence. Anti-British.
FANTASY | Mummy, The | 1999 | B | Not a war movie but a great adventure. And let's face it, Rachel Weisz is hot!
INTERWAR | Sand Pebbles, The | 1966 | A | A peculiar film (set in 1926, China) for this list but I liked the way the sailors fight the ship.
INTERWAR | Task Force | 1949 | B | Gary Cooper in a history of USN Aviation. Navy cooperated, plodding, feel good movie for a past audience.
INTERWAR | Babylon Berlin | 2017 | B+ | German mini series police thriller dealing with the politics of the Weimar Republic including the Reichswehr's "state within the state" of the period. Interesting period details in the music and clothing. Solid story.
WWII | Hitler's SS: Portrait in Evil | 1985 | B+ | Thought provoking movie about the German experience during the rise of the NAZI party. Solid acting by Bill Nighy, John Shea, José Ferrer, Tony Randall. Bad title for a compelling and solid movie.
FANTASY | Mummy Returns, The | 2001 | B | Solid sequel. And...Rachel Weisz is still hot!
WWII | The Hindenburg | 1975 | B | Enjoyable George Scott film (he's a German) with fanciful intrigue surrounding the inevitable doom.
WWII | Battle of the River Plate | 1956 | B+ | Solid recounting of the titular battle and surrounding intrigues. Look out for Christopher Lee in an early role as the Uruguayan bar owner!

WWII | Sea Chase, The | 1955 | |
WWII | Winds of War, The | 1983 | A+ | Impressive mini series set in the world events leading up to Pearl Harbor. European focus made it much better than I expected. Loved Mitchum, meh on Jan-Michael Vincent, hated Ali MacGraw (character good, her acting bad.) Minor historical and equipment issues but overall a great series!

WWII | Danger: UXB! | 1979 | B+ | British series about unexploded bomb disposal during the Blitz. Stars Anthony Andrews. Very good, though later episodes get a little "soapy". The disposal scenes are some of the most tense ever filmed IMHO.
WWII | Darkest Hour | 2017 | A | Great flick! Oldman is great! Didn't love the portrayal of Churchill but the Labour guys hate their portrayal more! Minor historical tropes abound for the Briton, but a great movie!
WWII | Dunkirk | 2017 | A | The history is great, the characters and drama are amazing...the only thing that detracted from it was the differing viewpoints being jumbled in "time". Must see flick for the enthusiast. Mark Rylance is great!
WWII | 49th Parallel | 1941 | A | Classic Canadian propaganda feature AND a GOOD movie. Stranded U-boat shore party tries to get out of the Dominion. Gerry officer a real baddy. Canucks are awesome. Hutterites, trappers, and natives prove their worth against the Master Race. Massey's scene a must see in an ending that is a real pleasure!
WWII | Foyle's War (Series) | 2002 | A+ | Michael Kitchen plays Cristopher Foyle, an English police detective during the war. Well done vision of the era and the populace. Many of the crimes center around the wartime issues. Highly recommend!
WWII | Heroes of Telemark, The | 1965 | C |
WWII | Island at War | 2004 | B | The story of a fictional Channel Island occupied during WWII. Phillip Glenister stars. Good drama.

WWII | Boot, Das | 1981 | A+ | Gripping and gritty German sub drama. Must see.
WWII | Hell Boats | 1970 | C | Standard special-mission-against-all-odds fare. Minor absurdities like Germans never noticing the Eboat in the harbor despite flying over every day and senseless love story involving a promiscuous wife who still longs for her husband, don't deter too badly from an okay final battle. Meh.
WWII | In Harm's Way | 1965 | A+ | The Duke really can act, you know. This is one of those times.
WW2 | Mission To Moscow | 1943 | C- | Pure wartime propaganda. Interesting enough as long as you don't forget that.

WWII | War And Remembrance | 1995 | A+ | Nothing but praise for this "last of the great miniseries". Still loved Mitchum. Thought the cast changes were a welcome improvement on some questionable choices in the first series.
SCIFI | Final Countdown, The | 1980 | B § | Another one that defies categorization. The USS Nimitz goes back to Pearl Harbor. I split the difference on the dates. It's guilty pleasure of mine.
WWII | Age of Heroes | 2011 | C+ | Solid commando fare. Liked Sean Bean.
WWII | Battle Cry | 1955 | C | War scenes decent, love stuff interminable. Van Heflin
WWII
Battle of El Alamein, The "La battaglia di El Alamein" |
1969 | C- | Italian war movie for Italians. Typical of the "war is hell" genre. Equipment bad, acting not good, BUT the brothers' story grew on me and the Italian perspective made for a novelty. For the die-hard but watchable.. |
WWII | Battle of the Coral Sea | 1959 | C | Mistitled movie using the battle to shill a weak POW yarn about captured sub crew. Cliff Robertson got paid but...best to avoid.
WWII | Battle of Midway, The | 1942 | B | Documentary. Actual footage from the battle narrated by Fonda
WWII | Big Red One, The | 1980 | B § | A personal fav. Great combat with good characters. Suffers only from its anti-war morality play.

WWII | Commandos | 1968 | FF | One of the worst war movies ever made. Could almost make you hate Lee Van Cleef.
WWII | Enemy at the Gates | 2001 | B+ | Your Russian friends will hate the well-fed Reds, but a solid movie with limited history.
WWII | Flying Leathernecks | 1951 | B |

WWII | McHale's Navy | 1964 | C |
WWII | Midway | 1976 | B | In spite of a stupid Anglo/Asian love story which does nothing, still worthy. Heston and Fonda
WWII | Midway | 2019 | A | Surprisingly really good! Takes on a lot (starts in the 30's!) but handles the history ok with some forgivable omissions. Action sequences are typical Emmerich fare but will keep non-buffs in the seats!
WWII | Morituri | 1965 | C | Brando and Yul Brenner in a sabotage caper. Slow pace crimped what would have been a solid movie otherwise. Good acting in a poor script that actually had a good idea.

WWII | Pacific, The | 2010 | C+ | HBO's not-quite-as-good counterpart to Band of Brothers. IMHO the writing was too "TV" trying to include everything and appeal to everyone. 10 episodes.
WWII | Passage, The | 1979 | D | Anthony Quinn as Basque guide leading German scientist's family across mountains. Too artsy, McDowell's Nazi really over the top.
WWII | Play Dirty | 1969 | D | Michael Caine, Nigel Davenport. Great actors wasted in a mediocre flick. Dirty Dozen does Tobruk. A lot of time wasted on scenes that don't do anything to advance the very thin plot.
WWII | PT 109 | 1963 | B+ | I liked it. Very much a puff piece in its day, it has since become just another decent war movie
WWII | Run Silent Run Deep | 1958 | A+ | Clark Gable as a sub commander from the Ed Beach book. Better than ‘Hellcats of the Navy’

WWII | Eagle Has Landed, The | 1976 | AA+ | Enough combat for a war movie but it’s the behind the lines stuff that’s cool. Robert Duval and Michael Cain as Germans. One of the best!

WWII | Memphis Belle | 1990 | B | Enjoyable with a heavy dose of sentimentality. Interesting note: The BF-109s used in the pic are actually Spanish Air Force Ha-1112s. The variant used in the "Battle of Britain".
WWII | Merrill's Marauders | 1962 | B |
WWII | Monuments Men, The | 2014 | B- | Enjoyed this movie! Good storytelling with a lot less history than I would have liked. Almost all the characters are fictional even though some of the situations were real. Clooney is a good moviemaker though!
WWII | Objective, Burma! | 1945 | B |
WWII | Operation Crossbow | 1965 | B- | Peppard & Kemp aid Allied efforts to impede the V-1 and V-2 programs. Sophia Loren got lead billing but only played a cameo role to help with the box office. I enjoyed it, but it's not a must-see.

WWII | 633 Squadron | 1964 | C | Classic with a fav actor in Cliff Robertson. Not bad and considered a classic, the best I could muster was a "meh".
WWII | A Bridge Too Far | 1977 | A | Classic war movie! Solid history with minor issues. (Redford's 'composite' role being one of them). Attenborough's insistence on real locations and great special effects make it a must see!

WWII | Breakthrough | 1979 | D | Wow. A "sequel" to Sam Peckinpah's Cross of Iron this movie is terrible. It wastes several great actors (Not however, Burton. Who is actually "wasted" while doing the film!) Music is even BAD! Equipment grim.
WWII | Churchill | 2017 | _ | (To be reviewed) Brian Cox as Churchill. Not well-received.
WWII | Counterpoint | 1968 | C | Heston as orchestra conductor captured with USO during Bulge by Max Schell. So contrived as to be silly. Heston very unlikable. Rooting for the Germans!
WWII | Code Name: Emerald | 1985 | C | Ed Harris in a WW2 espionage flick. Formulaic but solid.
WWII | Dirty Dozen, The | 1967 | A | Still a great romp after all these years!
WWII | Dirty Dozen: The Next Mission | 1985 | C | Not so good sequel, but still fun.
WWII | Dirty Dozen: The Deadly Mission | 1987 | D | Even worse follow-up. Avoid.
WWII | Dirty Dozen: The Fatal Mission | 1988 | D | Even worse follow-up. Avoid.
WWII | Eye of the Needle | 1981 | B | Follett novel with Sutherland starring. Solid spy flick.
WWII | Fireball Forward | 1972 | B | Non-historical but acceptable war flick. Ben Gazzara taking over a hard-luck division at the front but also utilizes lots of extra footage from "Patton".
WWII | Great Escape, The | 1963 | A | Classic.
WWII | Ike: Countdown to D-Day | 2004 | B | Tom Selleck as a surprisingly realistic Eisenhower. Good D-Day command view script. Would have been an "A" but they did a horrible hit-job on Patton (Gerald McRaney)
WWII | Kelly's Heroes | 1970 | B- § | A guilty pleasure.
| 1944 | WWII | Last
Panzer, The/ "Battaglia dell'ultimo panzer, La" |
1969 | FF- | Possibly THE worst war movie ever made. |
WWII | Longest Day, The | 1962 | AA+ | Personal fav. Good story and good action!
WWII | Long Ride, The | 1984 | D- | Hungarian locations are the only good thing about this "behind-the-lines" aviator movie. Liked the Hungarian "cowboys" and learned about the "Hortobágy".
WWII | Miracle at St. Anna | 2008 | B | Good movie could have been great. Suffers from its director's racism. Intriguing plot.
WWII | Only the Brave | 2006 | B+ | Solid movie about little-known contributions of the Japanese 442nd Regimental Combat Team and specifically the 100th Btn. Told as flashbacks and a little heavy on emotion, so not an "A" but good battle scenes.
WWII | Plot to Kill Hitler, The | 1990 | B+ | Less star-studded but better version of Valkyrie. Ian Richardson as Gen Beck
WWII | Red Ball Express | 1952 | C+ | Story of the Army truckers in early invasion France. Not a sexy subject. Okay movie.
WWII | Red Tails | 2012 | C | Tuskegee Airmen story. Not bad, not good...so cliche ridden it got in the way of the story. More like a movie made in the 50s but with really good special effects! I liked "The Tuskegee Airmen" better.
WWII | Rhinemann Exchange, The | 1977 | B | Mini-series of Ludlum Novel about an American facilitating an exchange of diamonds and technology between the Yanks and Gerrys. Not electrifying but solid. 4 hours long. But I'm Jeremy Kemp fan.
WWII | Saving Private Ryan | 1998 | AA+ | If not the best war movie ever made, damn close.
WWII | Stalag 17 | 1953 | A | Gotta love Bill Holden.
WW2 | Train, The | 1964 | A § | Burt Lancaster, Paul Scofield Train full of art trying to avoid the Germans. VERY GOOD John Frankenheimer film!
WW2 | Valkyrie | 2008 | C | Not bad, not good. Cruise as a German, meh.
WWII | Bridge at Remagen, The | 1969 | B+ | Robert Vaughn and the German part of this movie is great. George Segal and Ben Gazzara are tedious. Lots of combat. Neat political story behind the making of this film in pre-Soviet invasion Czechoslovakia and the escape of the film crew in the aftermath.
WWII | Brother's War | 2009 | D | Acting is poor, plot is just odd (the Masonry thing), equipment pretty good but the 50-star American flag at the end is just too much. Not a lot to commend this unless you're in the mood for the "Noble Nazis". The Russians are almost cartoonish.
WWII | Bunker, The | 1981 | B+ | Anthony Hopkins as Hitler. Based on O'Donnell's book that was sympathetic to Speer. Solid made-for-TV fare.
WWII | Ensign Pulver | 1965 | C | Lame comedy sequel to "Mister Roberts" made clearly for $$$. Lemon replaced in title role but many other famous actors appear including Robert Walker, Burl Ives, Walter Matthau, Peter Marshall, and Jack Nicholson. Only for the diehard naval WWII buff!
WWII | Flags of Our Fathers | 2006 | C+ | Great combat and good cinematography. Slow pace when not fighting. It's as if it was made to be "art" as opposed to being entertaining. Bad choice. Meh
WWII | Fury | 2014 | A | Pitt is good. Equipment is great. Script is "meh". End is over-the-top! Solid action!
WWII | Great Raid, The | 2005 | B+ | Slow but reasonably historical account of the Cabanatuan raid. Book “Ghost Soldiers” was better.
WWII | Hacksaw Ridge | 2016 | A | Better than expected! Good war movie with a great story of Desmond Doss. His requirement for accuracy (with the exceptiopn of some personal details) makes this one a must see!
WWII | Last Days of Patton, The | 1986 | B | Follow-up to the 1969-70 movie. Neat early life flashbacks but depressing.
WWII | Letters from Iwo Jima | 2006 | C+ | Better than "Flags" with a good insight into the Japanese soldier.. Mostly in Japanese and suffers from 'moody' Eastwood direction. Meh
WWII | Mister Roberts | 1955 | A | Call it a "dramedy" with Cagney as the overbearing captain and Fonda his popular XO. Lemmon is the comic relief but an important character (and got an Oscar for it.) Good story, great movie!
FANTASY | The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor | 2008 | A | Another fun sequel in a franchise that gave so much. No Academy awards fare but a good time. Love the Yetis, miss Rachel Weisz!
WWII | Stranger, The | 1946 | A | Edward G. Robinson vs Orson Welles. A very good thriller with Welles as Holocaust architect and Robinson as his pursuer in a Connecticut town. I really enjoyed this one!
ISRAEL | Cast a Giant Shadow | 1966 | A+ | Story of Mickey Marcus (Kirk Douglas) with roles for John Wayne, Sinatra, and Yul Brenner. Great movie!

KOREA | Fixed Bayonets! | 1951 | C | Richard Basehart as Cpl Denno forced into command. Okay, but very 50’s.
KOREA | Tank Battalion | 1958 | FF- | True challenger for worst ever. Bad everything. Inaccurate to the point of laughable. Horrible acting, script and situations. Utterly unbelievable. You can see Frank Gorshin (The old Batman Riddler) in an early role.
KOREA | Glory Brigade, The | 1953 | B | Victor Mature (acquired taste) as a combat officer with Greek UN troops. Acceptable.
COMEDY | Captain's Paradise, The | 1953 | A | Alec Guinness as a ship's captain maintaining two wives in two ports. Lot of fun!
KOREA | Cease Fire! | 1953 | C+ | Korean War propaganda film. Real soldiers as actors made for an interesting back-story but bad acting. Since it was filmed during the war and in-country though, the equipment is the real-deal even if the way it's implemented isn't. Good for minis and gamers but for the aficionado only.
COLDWAR | Fidel | 2002 | C | TV drama (3+hours) about the life of Castro. Enjoyed more than I thought I would, with some interesting combat and decent acting. Choppy and very sympathetic to the dictator.
KOREA | Pork Chop Hill | 1959 | B+ | Peck as company commander in hopeless cause. Solid war picture. I like, but very pessimistic.
COLDWAR | Company, The | 2007 | A | Really well done 6-part epic on the CIA's early years through to 1991. Though O'Donnell isn't great, the rest of the cast is. Michael Keaton as James Angleton is worth the time spent! Based on the best-selling novel by Robert Littell.
COLDWAR | Soldier of Fortune | 1955 | B | Clark Gable, Susan Hayward. Good Gable adventure yarn in exotic locale. Not war flick but fun romp into commie China without all of that pesky character development!
COLDWAR | Strategic Air Command | 1955 | B | James Stewart as SAC pilot. Good but…
COLDWAR | K-19: The Widowmaker | 2002 | B | Harrison Ford as a Russian captain of the first Soviet ballistic missile nuclear submarine. It's no October, but still a decent naval drama.
COLDWAR | Bridge of Spies | 2015 | B | Tom Hanks as the lawyer for a Russkie spy and later the negotiator for his exchange for Gary Powers. Some deviations and embellishments for drama but very good!
COLDWAR | Town Without Pity | 1961 | C | Kirk Douglas as an Army lawyer in occupied Germany. Good drama. Frank Sutton as one of the defendants in a rape trial.
POLITICAL | Advise and Consent | 1962 | A | Last role for Laughton. Good political drama. They don't make thoughtful movies like this nowadays.
COLDWAR | Manchurian Candidate, The | 1962 | A | Really fine thriller and still holds up.
COLDWAR | Topaz | 1969 | C+ | Overated Cold War spy thriller from Hitchcock. Really wanted to like it...based on recent events of the day (1962 Sapphire Affair).
COLDWAR | A Gathering of Eagles | 1963 | B | Rock Hudson as Col. Jim Caldwell, commander of a Strat bomber wing. Good movie even if the drama centers around only an ORI “Operational Readiness Inspection” Predictable.
VIETNAM | Green Berets, The | 1968 | B § | This movie is to Vietnam what ‘Gung Ho’ is to WWII. I like it, of course!
POLITICAL | Best Man, The | 1964 | A | Henry Fonda as a prez candidate opposing Cliff Robertson. Very good! Stands up in today's political climate. The more we change, the more we stay the same.
COLDWAR | Fail-Safe | 1964 | A | Henry Fonda as the prez in a Cold War thriller. Very fine movie making. Crappy nuke protocols.
COLDWAR | Fail Safe | 2000 | B | Richard Dreyfuss & Noah Wyle do a great job in this remake of a classic.
VIETNAM | Go Tell the Spartans | 1978 | B | Burt Lancaster as a military advisor in Vietnam

VIETNAM | Siege of Firebase Gloria, The | 1989 | A | R.Lee Ermey. ‘Nuff said.

VIETNAM | Hamburger Hill | 1987 | B | Better than "Platoon." Not as good as “Jacket”.
COLD WAR | Phantom | 2013 | B | Decent Russky sub movie with no pretense at accents. Good acting (Ed Harris, David Duchovny) with weak script. Loosely based on the speculative mission of the real K129 with closer parallels than expected. Special DVD feature on real sub worth a watch.
ISRAEL | Eagles Attack at Dawn | 1970 | B | Cheap movie for Israeli audiences of the time. Not as bad as you would think. Bad guys were kind of clever! Excellent review worth reading here. Made by the same guys that made "Delta Force"
VIETNAM | Bat*21 | 1988 | B | Solid movie.
VIETNAM | Flight of the Intruder | 1991 | A | Cool aircraft movie with lots of action!
ISRAEL | Sword of Gideon | 1986 | B+ | Designed for television, it runs a little long and the acting by Bauer is rough. Otherwise, a solid, reasonably historic account of the real "Operation Wrath of God" by the Israelis.
COLDWAR | Day of the Jackal, The | 1973 | AA+ | Classic thriller! Fox is very cool.
ISRAEL | Kippur | 2000 | C+ | Gitai's overly artsy film of his own experiences as a member of a helicopter rescue crew during the 1973 Yom Kippur war. Typical anti-war war film, heavy on chaos and blood, light on patriotism. I was impressed with the equipment which was period and seemed accurate with the modified Centurion MBTs.
VIETNAM / ADVENTURE
Kong: Skull Island | 2017 | B- | Sam Jackson, John C. Reilly and John Goodman in a very entertaining if not improbable tale about the big ape! Lots of fun! Mills: We just got taken down by a monkey the size of a building! Cole: Yeah. That was an unconventional encounter. |
COLDWAR | Night Flight to Moscow (Le Serpent) | 1973 | C+ | Yul Brenner and Henry Fonda in Cold War spy thriller. A "techno-thriller" in 1973 with the cutting edge espionage stuff. Good movie with odd ending.
MODERN | Marathon Man, The | 1976 | D | Watched for Olivier and the fact that it is rated a classic thriller. Stayed with it out of duty. Cannot believe this thing was the toast of '76. Good grief. How bad were the other movies then? You are warned.
COLDWAR | Odessa File, The | 1974 | B | Solid adaptation of Forsythe novel starring Voight
MODERN | Terrorists, The | 1975 | A | Connery and Ian McShane in a hijacking/political thriller. Very good with lots of plot twists to the end.
ISRAEL | Raid on Entebbe | 1977 | B+ | Charles Bronson/ Yaphet Kotto version. Cool, a little more action than the 1976 version with better production quality.
ISRAEL | Victory at Entebbe | 1976 | A | I liked this version better even if it’s a little less realistic. Wolper productions are paced well and more like watching a play. The videotape is a little distracting. Linda Blair, Kirk Douglas, Richard Dreyfuss.
MODERN | The Boys From Brazil | 1978 | B | Classic with great actors! Aging Nazis trying to breed a new Adolph. Very good!
MODERN | The Wild Geese | 1978 | A | Solid mercenary flick with many of my fav Brit stars of the period (Burton, Harris, Moore.) The theme song is in the running for one of the most incongruous I've ever heard for an adventure movie. It was terrible.
MODERN | Argo | 2012 | A- | Good movie with some historical issues. Worth watching as long as you read up on those issues. Really good at capturing the mood of the Hostage Crisis.
MODERN | North Sea Hijack | 1979 | B | Roger Moore as Ffolkes. A non-Bond flick right in the midst of all that “007” fame. Good action!

MODERN | The Beast | 1988 | C- | Interesting. Gritty. Lots of technical issues. For the armor junkie who can stand a heavy morality play.
COLDWAR | Farewell | 2009 | A+ | ColdWar spy (Operation Farewell) thriller. Colonel Vladimir Vetrov, a KGB defector gathers documents and gives them to the French DST. But he chooses an unlikely contact. Good movie!
COLDWAR | Pentagon Wars, The | 1998 | C | Entertaining liberal skewering of the process that created the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. It highlights the worst, emphasizes with satire and completely ignores the contemporary Soviet developments of the BMP IFV. Fun movie though!
COLDWAR | World War III | 1982 | B | A Soviet paratroop drop into Alaska defended by National Guard troops. Not bad. Hudson and Kieth.
COLDWAR | Firefox | 1982 | A | Clint Eastwood stealing futuristic Soviet fighter. His Russian is questionable but he's still awesome!

MODERN | Debt, The | 2011 | C+ | Okay Mirren film. Thankfully, the real Mossad isn't quite so squeamish.
MODERN | Fourth Protocol, The | 1987 | A | Caine & Brosnan in good thriller about Soviet nuke sleeper.
MODERN | Doomsday Gun, The | 1994 | B+ | Frank Langella and Kevin Spacey in an HBO movie about Gerald Bull, designer of Iraq's “Supergun”. Well acted, heavy political bias but solid movie about the man.
MODERN | Taffin | 1988 | C | Brosnan in a tough-guy role.

COLDWAR | Package, The | 1989 | B | Cold War romp with slightly implausible setup. Tommy lee Jones and Gene Hackman.
MODERN | Navy SEALS | 1990 | B |
MODERN | House of Cards | 1990 | AA | Yep, awesome! Francis Urquhart's (Ian Richardson) Shakespearean rise to PM after Thatcher. "You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment."
THRILLER | By Dawn's Early Light | 1990 | D- | Good actors wasted in ludicrous nuclear war debacle. Based on a 1983 novel, there really no redeeming value from the scenario to the character actions to the equipment. The stupid salute crap at the end was just incredibly stupid.
THRILLER | Company Business | 1991 | C | Hackman spy yarn in end-of-cold-war yawner. Interesting other actors including Baryshnikov and Kurtwood Smith. Movie suffered from being made almost literally as the Soviet Union fell!
THRILLER | Spygames | 2001 | A | Awesome movie! Tight script, great acting. Must see thriller!
MODERN | House of Cards II: To Play the King | 1993 | AA | Less stirring but still fun. FU goes after a thinly veiled "King" Charles er ...see if you can pick out the royals!
MODERN | Fatherland | 1994 | A+ | Rutger Hauer as Xavier March. Germany wins WW2 and March, a detective in the Kriminalpolizei and a Major in the SS, is about to uncover some dark secrets. Under appreciated book adaptation. Pretty well done!

MODERN | Black Hawk Down | 2001 | A+ | A masterpiece.
MODERN | Tears of the Sun | 2003 | B | Intense. African mili-thriller with Bruce Willis.
MODERN | Archangel | 2005 | C | Rusky variation on the "Boys From Brazil" with a young Stalin as the object of the exercise. Daniel Craig is an unlikely intellectual.
MODERN | Hurt Locker, The | 2008 | B | Renner is good. Story is intense. A lot of cliché war movie stuff like the beloved native child, unprofessional renegade behavior, etc. make it just another AWWM. Unis and equip were okay but not perfect.
MODERN | Manchurian Candidate, The | 2004 | A+ | Remake of classic with Denzel Washington and Liev Schreiber. Very good!
MODERN | Jarhead | 2005 | D+ | It has moments…but I can’t recommend. Yet another anti-war, war movie.

MODERN | E-Ring (TV Series) | 2005 | C | Short-lived Benjamin Bratt series about the Pentagon.
MODERN | The Guardian | 2006 | B+ | Okay, a "military movie" not a war movie with Costner and Kutcher. I was prepared to hate it but ended up liking it. If you want a modern Coastie movie...this is the only one I've seen!
MODERN | The State Within | 2006 | A | A 6-part thriller that was a touch on the anti-American side BUT still very watchable. I enjoyed it!
ADVENTURE
5 Days of War (aka 5 Days of August) |
2011 | B | Decent movie about journos trying to get the word out to the world about Russian atrocities during the 2008 Russian - Georgian war. Russians are painted as monsters, personal story gets in way. Some scenes very scary though. Solid movie with several good combat scenes. |
MODERN | Princess of Mars | 2009 | C | Direct to DVD version of Burroughs classic. Takes massive liberties but worth the watch for Traci Lords! John Carter is a US sniper in Afghanistan when he is whisked away to Barsoom by a military experiment.

MODERN | Skyline | 2010 | C | This is a pure action flick. The aliens are just there to give us a reason to watch the humans flee and die.
SCIFI | Battle: Los Angeles | 2011 | B | A great romp with cool battle scenes. Don't look too close at the script or you will notice characters and lines from every war movie ever made. Acting - over the top...but we ain't here for the acting right?!
SCIFI | Battleship | 2012 | C | Pure fun. No realism. So just sit back and enjoy the ride! The personal story of Col Gregory D. Gadson (the double amputee) in real life is incredible and probably the real takeaway from this movie for me...that is aside from an obvious Oscar snub for Rihanna! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_D._Gadson
MODERN | Red Dawn (2012) | 2012 | C- | Weak remake with bad acting and an inconsistent setup. North Koreans take the original's Cuban slot.

MODERN | Red Dawn (new) | 2012 | C- | Interesting if hard to swallow premise provides the setting for redux of past version. Characters less developed (if that is possible) but fun romp!

MODERN | Atlas Shrugged | 2011 | B | Tough read to update and take down to a movie length. I really liked it but more as a political treatise than for it's movie making. Only a war movie if you consider the Eternal Libertarian Struggle!!
MODERN | Atlas Shrugged II | 2012 | B | Solid second part. Maybe better than first. I liked the different actors.
MODERN | Okkupert (Occupied) | 2015 | A | Norwegian political thriller TV series with 10 episodes. Well acted and taut script that goes where others have gone before but a great ride! You will learn a lot about Norway!
SCIFI | Children of Men | 2006 | B | Not a dystopian fan but liked this. Caine was memorable!
SCIFI | Space: Above and Beyond | 1995 | B | This one didn’t get very far (only 22 eps) but a fair stab at “Black Sheep” for a new age.
SCIFI | Alien | 1979 | B | The beginning.
SCIFI | Star Trek: Enterprise (TV Series) | 2001 | D- | Really? Somebody liked this? Really?
| 2154 | SCIFI | Avatar | 2009 | C- | Great effects. Cardboard
characters. Banal story. The |
SCIFI | Aliens | 1986 | A | Game over man... Game over! The best.
SCIFI | Alien³ | 1992 | D | Sometimes it's just best to let the series die. If Ripley could have just jumped a little earlier, could have saved me two hours.
SCIFI | Star Trek (The Future Begins) | 2009 | A | I liked this reboot. Nicely done!
SCIFI | Star Trek Into Darkness | 2013 | A | Still feelin' it!
SCIFI | Star Trek (TV Series) | 1966 | A | Classic whose reruns were the basis for my love of sci-fi.
SCIFI | Star Trek: TNG (TV Series) | 1987 | A | I loved right up till the holodiction began.
SCIFI | Star Trek: DS9 (TV Series) | 1993 | A | Cardassians are the the best Fed foe since the taming of the Klingons!
SCIFI | Star Trek: Voyager (TV Series) | 1995 | C | Whatever.
SCIFI | Star Trek: The Motion Picture | 1979 | B+ | Okay. I'm in. Little artsy but servicable.
SCIFI | Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan | 1982 | A+ | That's what I'm talkin' about!
SCIFI | Star Trek III: The Search for Spock | 1984 | B | Timidly optimistic
SCIFI | Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home | 1986 | D | Whales, really...whales?!
SCIFI | Star Trek V: The Final Frontier | 1989 | D | The last gasp of a tired crew. Sad.
SCIFI
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country |
1991 | A+ | Wait a minute...we're not dead yet! |
|
2293 & 2371 |
SCIFI | Star Trek Generations | 1994 | C | I guess it had to be done. |
|
2063 & 2373 |
SCIFI | Star Trek: First Contact | 1996 | C- | Not a fan of time travel or the Borg. |
SCIFI | Star Trek: Insurrection | 1998 | C | At least it didn't include real time travel.
SCIFI | Star Trek Nemesis | 2002 | |
SCIFI | Battlefield Earth | 2000 | D § | I really enjoyed the book (in spite of its author) and was distraught this movie is SOOOO bad. Still...
SCIFI | Starship Troopers | 1997 | A- | Awesome movie! Captured the flavor of the novel but departed from the story so much as to be a different animal entirely.
SCIFI
Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation |
2004 | D- | Just crap. No real relationship to any portion of the book and really not even the first movie. Bad everything. |
SCIFI | Starship Troopers 3: Marauder | 2008 | C- | Improvement over the 2nd one with at least some relationship to the original movie. Still bad acting (but hey, wasn't getting an Oscar anyway, right?) and the story was weird. Between the singing Sky Marshal, the religious bashing and the "jump-the-shark" super brain bug I cant say it was good, but there was a lot of bug guts!
SCIFI | Wing Commander | 1999 | B | Actually, surprisingly…kind of good!
SCIFI | Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (BBC) | 1981 | A | A personal fav even if the production is old-school! Simon Jones as Arthur and Richard Vernon as Slartibartfast are a lot of fun!
SCIFI | Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy | 2005 | C | Cute take. I like Deschanel and Marvin. The rest...meh.
SCIFI | Dr Who | 1963 | A | Original BBC Series
